The United Nations General Assembly has declared that from 2018, 20 May will be World Bee Day.

The General Assembly voted unanimously in favour of the proposal, wishing to remind everyone of how important bees are. One key objective is to raise awareness about the crucial role played by bees in sustainable development, at the same time warning of their declining numbers.

Bees first appeared on Earth 15 million years ago and became one of the few types of insect that man attempted to make use of. People admired the society of the hive, making the bee a symbol which became a source of inspiration for all forms of art from prehistoric times to the present. The contribution of bees to the environment and to the human race is not limited to their highly beneficial products, but more importantly extends to their active role in the reproductive process of plants (pollination).

Most crops depend on bees for the transfer of pollen. Without pollination, many wild and cultivated plant species would not exist and the human diet would be much poorer.
