COMMEMORATIVE SET OF STAMPS “Blooming herbs of the Greek Land”
Τετάρτη, 14 Δεκεμβρίου 2016

Greece is rich in plant organisms, having at least 6600 species and subspecies of pteridophytes and spermatophytes. The geographical location of the country at the meeting point of three continents, its topography, the varying climate in its different regions, its geological substratum and its unsettled geo-history have contributed to the wealth but also the rarity of its species of fauna, approximately 22% of which are endemic plants that exist nowhere else in the world.

At the same time, Greece is fortunate to have a written history going back at least 3500 years. The primitive search for herbs to treat health problems was recorded and passed on to future generations, establishing the modern science of pharmacy. According to the World Health Organisation, approximately 80% of the world’s population mainly or exclusively use medicinal plants as a method of treatment. Some of these medicinal plants from the eastern Mediterranean are presented in this set of stamps , bridging traditional uses and modern science, the experience of thousands of years and today’s need for proof and interpretation of the medicinal properties of herbs.
