COMMEMORATIVE SET OF STAMPS “SEVEN WISE MEN OF ANTIQUITY”
Πέμπτη, 27 Ιουλίου 2017

What makes a man wise? Apparently not just one single property: you have to be willing to daringly throw yourself into the stream of your life and struggle in it, and not just give in and let the current drive you; to distant yourself from the sequence of events that constitute your life and watch it as if you were just a spectator, although at the same time you remain the leading actor; to have the ability to make rules out of instances and norms out of occurrences; to see patterns into chaos; to consider every moment – whether sad or joyful – as a unique opportunity. In the end of the day what makes you wise seems to be a very basic, a simple choice: to live the life of a rational being.

All these should be enough for you to acquire wisdom; nevertheless, they wouldn’t ever suffice to earn you any mention in history books as a wise person. To this purpose – apart from everything else – you need to have courage: courage to expose yourself, to be involved, to become an active player in your time, to contribute, to open up yourself. If these Seven Sages are of such a great importance to us today, it is mainly due to this: they keep reminding us that wisdom complacently kept private is no better than barren conceit – no more useful than a painting by Rembrandt van Rim locked in a cellar.
