COMMEMORATIVE SET OF STAMPS “190 YEARS OF HELLENIC POST”
Τρίτη, 9 Οκτωβρίου 2018

On 24 September 1828, the first governor of Greece, Ioannis Kapodistrias, signed the XVII resolution issued on Poros “for the establishment of a regular postal service”, thereby founding the “General Post”. Under the same resolution, five central post offices were established in Argos, Tripolitsa, Epidaurus, Aegina and Syros, while nine postmen on foot and sixteen on horseback were to bring mail from the countryside and deliver it to its recipients.

On the same day, Alexios Loukopoulos was appointed the first general director of the Greek post office, with the signature of the Secretary of State Spyridon Trikoupis “in accordance with resolution 6550 and the government provisions no. 6557”. Together with Dimitrios Perroukas, Loukopoulos drafted the first regulations for the post office, which were published in 1828.

One hundred and ninety years later, Hellenic Post still plays a leading role in Greece, having modernised and adapted to the demands of a new era, with 6100 employees, 679 branches and 630 postal outlets.

Hellenic Post is Greece’s oldest company, operating in a highly competitive environment and maintaining the particular identity and values that it has formed over the course of two centuries.
