Issue of a Commemorative Set of Stamps and Miniature Sheet marking the 100th anniversary of the death of Ion Dragoumis
Πέμπτη, 30 Ιουλίου 2020

To mark the 100th anniversary of the death of Ion Dragoumis, Hellenic Post is issuing a set of stamps in his honour, celebrating the central role he played in Greek politics in the early 20th century.

A diplomat, intellectual, writer and politician, his name and life were inseparable from Greece and the country's battles. He was born in 1878 into an important political family of that era. When he was young, he read Goethe, Schiller, Locke and Byron, and became friends with the Macedonian freedom fighter Pavlos Melas, who had married his sister, Natalia. Growing up, he was an active supporter of Greece’s national ambitions.

A passionate advocate of the ‘Great Idea’, he worked zealously in key diplomatic posts in Monastir (present-day Bitola), Constantinople, Alexandria, Rome and St. Petersburg. In 1915 he was elected as an independent member of parliament for Florina, while in 1917 he was exiled to Corsica with other political opponents of Eleftherios Venizelos.

He was a proponent of demotic Greek and a founder of the ‘Educational Club’, which campaigned for language reform. He also regularly published articles robustly putting forward his political ideas and arguing that Greece should occupy a stronger position internationally.

His life ended ingloriously on 31 July 1920, when he fell victim to the fanaticism and national division caused by the attempted murder of Venizelos in Paris.

Hellenic Post is issuing this Commemorative Set of Stamps and Miniature Sheet 100 years to the day since his execution by military security forces in the centre of Athens.
