Two and a half thousand years after the Battle of Salamis, Hellenic Post is dedicating a Commemorative Set of Stamps/Miniature Sheets – and a host of collectible products – to a great event that overturned the logic of numbers and determined the course of world history.

For the stamps commemorating this major anniversary, works of modern Greek culture have been chosen that reflect the values and ideals of the ancient battle that is a cornerstone of Western civilization.

In the Commemorative Set of Stamps/Miniature Sheet "2500 years since the Battle of Salamis", we feature the leading figure of Themistocles, who united the Greeks against despotism in a sea battle that marks the start of world naval history. Also depicted are miniature Greek and Phoenician ships from the unique Grypiotis collection, about which the writer and model-shipbuilder Evangelos N. Grypiotis himself says: “On the one hand, the Aphract (deckless) Trireme, the superweapon of the Greek fleet, was a marvel of ancient Greek shipbuilding and played a leading role in the Battle of Salamis. On the other, the Phoenician Bireme gives us important information about the structure of the Phoenician ships that were the spearhead of the Persian fleet. The two exhibits are the product of many years spent studying the historical and shipbuilding evidence of the time, and lend veracity to the issue.”

The “Themistocles” stamp is based on copperplate engravings by Prof. Yannis P. Gourzis of the Athens School of Fine Arts, while the other stamps and products are designed and adapted by Hellenic Post’s stamp engraver, Dr. Myrsini Vardopoulou.
