History

Hellenic Post (ELTA) has played for 196 years a vital role in the country’s social and business environment, with 475 branches, 471 post offices, and 3.070 employees. It was founded on September 24, 1828, by the first Governor of Greece, Ioannis Kapodistrias, under Resolution no. 6550 XVII. Since the beginning of 1900, the Postal Service, which until 1949 operated along with the Telegraphic and Telephone Service under the nomination "T.T.T.," has been under systematic organization.

In 1970, the postal service acquired the status of a Private Law Legal Entity under the nomination "ELTA" and was a public Societe Anonyme. In 1998, a significant modernization and restructuring program was launched, aiming to improve the quality of the services provided, increase productivity, and make the best use of the company's human resources.

In the same year, the subsidiary Hellenic Post Professional Training Center S.A. (KEK-ELTA SA) was founded.

In 2000, the subsidiary ELTA COURIER S.A. was founded.

In 2004, ELTA was named "Grand Sponsor" of the Athens Olympic Games.

In 2006, ELTA concluded a strategically crucial commercial agreement with the Hellenic Postbank, which further strengthened its position in retail banking. The aim is to maintain the relationship and revenue, jointly develop the two companies’ networks, and improve the quality of the services provided to their customers.

In 2008, ELTA completed a significant investment program to automate the network of Post Offices and Sorting Centers, upgrade the IT infrastructure, and develop Human Resources.

Law 4053/2012 established the full liberalization of Greece's postal market on 1/1/2013, and a new institutional framework was formed.

In 2016, ELTA entered the Greek electricity market, being granted a supply license from the Regulatory Authority for Energy (RAE).

In 2017, ELTA applied the Joint Ministerial Resolution for the customs clearance of postal items moving through the Universal Service Provider.

In 2018, the Greek State transferred its participation in ELTA to the Hellenic Corporation of Assets and Participations S.A. (HCAP), which was implemented.

In September 2020, Law 4727/2020 regulated issues of universal postal service and defined a transitional stage for the compensation of the universal service from 2013 until 2021.

In December 2020, Law 4758/2020 established a new framework for operating the Hellenic Post.

In December 2020, by Joint Ministerial Decision, it was decided to pay the amounts due to the Universal Service Provider for 2013-2018.

In December 2020, the share capital was increased, and the Hellenic Corporation of Assets and Participations S.A. (HCAP) took over 100% of the ELTA shares.

ELTA, understanding the modern needs of the market, renewed its mix of products and services by introducing in its network new, innovative products and services in order to enhance the service quality throughout the country.
